The new campus of the University of Applied Sciences and Arts is located in the heart of Brussels. It welcomes 1,000 students and offers 40 classrooms, 2 auditoriums, a library, a cafeteria and spacious terraces.
A part of the former brewery is expanded with new buildings in a balanced way.
The existing brick building was thoroughly renovated. New window openings were made in the facade masonry at careful chosen intervals. Sufficiently large openings could be created thanks to steel frames that are hidden behind the masonry. The concrete vaults in the cafeteria have been preserved. To create more openness in this space, a centrally positioned load-bearing masonry wall was replaced by steel columns. A steel roof pavilion crowns the former brewery, whose authentic character of brick architecture has been preserved.
The transparent new building connects directly to the existing building. On one side, the connection is made by a patio around which a steel structure has been erected. This slender structure carries claustra brickwork. At the other side of the facade, the building is supported by a series of slender steel slabs. A remarkable feature of this part of the campus is the two-storey underground structure housing the auditoria. The above-ground construction consists of a steel structure, prestressed hollow core slabs and a staircase in concrete.
