To further centralise the dispersed secondary school at the edge of the city, the existing buildings were extended with a new volume of about 5,000 m² on behalf of Scholen van Morgen. In addition to classrooms and workshoprooms, a meeting area, refectory, multipurpose hall and a sports hall are provided.
A wide stepped plinth forms the basis and connection for a compact plan on which five zones, each with its own volumetrics, positioned around a patio. The different classrooms and studios are connected by different circulation flows. The roof is designed as a roof terrace with the possibility to be used as an open-air classroom.
For the internal layout, one focused on multifunctional and flexible spaces. The classrooms are column-free to guarantee flexible use in the future. Only the outer walls and the wall between the corridor and the classrooms are load-bearing in order to prevent a structure that can’t be rearranged afterwards. The span of the classrooms is realised by prestressed floor slabs with compression layer. The load-bearing outer walls are finished with prefabricated concrete panels that rest on the cantilevering beams above the ground floor.
Multifunctional sports hall
The sports hall, and adjacent dressing rooms, is connected to the multifunctional hall. A retractable partition wall makes this space suitable for multifunctional use. The sports hall has a surface area of 813 m² and a height of 7 m.
The roof of the gym hall consists of laminated softwood beams (placed every 6 m) on which steel deck slabs rest. The roof beams rest on prefabricated concrete columns. The upper surface of the wooden beams is inclined and can be perforated for the passage of technical ducts, provided the positioning is carefully considered. The roof of the adjacent technical area is consisting of concrete core slabs to meet fire resistance requirements.
