For the roof of the home and studio of artist-scientist Panamarenko, we made a helicopter platform with a diameter of 7.14 m on which the Robinson R22 Beta II, a two-man helicopter weighing 1000 kg, should be able to land. T.O.P. office designs this based on the slender suspended platforms that are mounted on ships. Thanks to a “computational fluid dynamics” calculation, carried out by NUMFLO, the wind load could be determined accurately.
Before mounting this steel construction, the roof truss of the corner building was first reinforced. The platform rests on a T-shaped porch of hollow tubes SHS 114.3/5 S355, mounted on various interior walls. A secondary steel structure made of tubes CHS 60.3/5 S355 is grafted onto this and covered with a steel plate 8 mm thick. Around the landing plate a safety net was placed of reinforcement nets Ø6/100 with flat steel fins 80×15 mm. The whole has a total weight of 3350 kg and was lifted on top of the house in one piece.
